Digital Art!

Hi everyone! I realize it has been a deathly long time since I last posted - and the culprit is school. However, I did want to share with you something I have been working on for awhile - digital art. There are many free websites that you can use to create masterpieces, but one of my favorites is HarmonySketch. This is basically just a blank page that you can create different images on by dragging your mouse and selecting different colors and styles of "pencil."

Here are some of my favorites that I've created:

Snippets of Summer

Ahem. Excuse me, ladies and gentlemen, may I please have your attention. Today is my official last day of summer, and in honor of such a momentous occasion, I'd like to take a moment to reflect. I'd like to thank you all who have made these past three months possible, and congratulate those who were too wrapped up in their own life to bother replying to my messages/phone calls/texts. I love you all, as I love the summer.

Mostly.

Song(s) of Summer
This award goes out to that old-school (not really) classic, "Teach Me How to Dougie":

Jammed to this song at camp in June, requested it at my cousin's wedding in July, and taught my mom how to perfect the dance ... many times.

And because hip-hop can never take the cake all by itself, we are also issuing an award to Matt Nathanson's "Faster":

Fell in love with this song at the concert in July where I saw him LIVE and found myself singing "you taste like sunlight and strawberry bubblegum" on a daily basis throughout the rest of the summer.

Book of Summer
Janet Evanovitch's Stephanie Plum novels are just all too addicting!
Gobbled up two of them (working on the other 16) and have spent many hours debating with my friends whether Joe or Ranger are better characters. Can't wait until the first movie comes out in January, although I still wish they had cast Johnny Depp as Vinnie.

Movie of Summer
She's the Man, starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Bynes. After being badgered by my younger cousin to watch this, I finally checked it out from the library and devoured it with my friends from camp. Thoroughly recommended, especially if you're in the mood for a laugh.Drink of Summer
Who doesn't love a great smoothie? I honestly think I could live on these, especially Friedrichs' Toucan Tango, a yummy blend of peaches and other delicious fruit. Freddies has many other great smoothies as well - I suggest that you check them out!

Ahhh summer.... I'm going to miss you

Family Reunions and How to Survive Them

The fact of all family reunions is this: you are traveling an x number of miles to see people that you don't know. This is, at least, the fact of all of my family reunions. For example, yesterday my mom, my dad, and I got in the car and drove an hour and a half to a visitors center at a park we used to go camping at, and I swear to God (sure wish we could leave God out of this), 75% of the people there I had no clue who they were. Of course, this may be because my dad comes from a family of ten, and his mom and dad each come from a family of 12 (or 13 - something like that). Really, I shouldn't have been surprised, and I wasn't, I just kept thinking "so we came all the way here to awkwardly maneuver around people I at least haven't seen before?" The other 25% I could have seen in a 10 minute drive, considering they all lived near by. BUT. Oh well. Which, really, is what you have to say to yourself, because you're there, and you won't be leaving anytime soon. In the meantime, you can at least enjoy the food. And make a list of awkward situations a teenage girl in a chair is bound to come across, and simple ways to survive them.

1. Your great uncle (who you've never met before) telling you how beautiful he thinks you are ("even prettier than your mom").
Thank the old man! Considering that you have just gotten back from the bathroom mirror, and are thinking that today maybe wasn't the day to wear your hair down, this is a grand compliment, and indeed, a grand self-esteem booster, even if you already have enough self-esteem for 1000 other teenage girls. However, this is not a topic you want to linger on, especially with your great uncle you just met. So, smile a dazzling smile, say thanks, and quickly change the subject.

2. Your great aunt's second cousin once removed has just asked you your plans for after high school.
You have two choices. You can tell the truth. "I want to go to New York University to study play writing." No fun. And more importantly, this will lead to more discussions of what you like to write about (controversial matters), if you've written plays before (yes), and what they're about (a teacher falling in love with his student, a girl killed by her parents, and a lesbian who is happier than her straight friend, who attempts suicide 1/2 way through the second act). Or, you can lie so outrageously that they'll be left there to blink and wonder what went wrong with your upbringing. "I'd really like to work as an over-the-phone adult entertainer in New York City, and go to school to become a sting agent." (Ok, so not entirely a lie, BUT, this answer is bound to leave them speechless).

3. The entire clan has just stood up to pray a Catholic prayer that you don't know because you're not Catholic.
Look down at the floor, and mouth "cantaloupe" over and over. No one will know the difference. When it comes time to make the sign of the cross, don't worry, because your arms aren't strong enough anyway.

4. General Boredom
First and foremost, go and explore the building the family reunion is being held in. Look at the pictures on the wall, stare through the windows of locked rooms, and smell any object that looks exciting. Next, go outside. Walk around the entire building, twice. Contemplate the wildlife. Gaze adoringly at the sky. When you get too hot, go inside for a glass of cold water. When inside, group people into categories based on anything and everything. What they're wearing, what Star Wars character they look most like, how many apples it would take to fill your shirt to make your boobs as big as theirs. Be creative. Then, if you still haven't satisfied your lethargy, think about how 1 out of every 5 people have herpes, and pick out which of your relatives have the hurps.

SMA Awareness Month on Etsy

I logged into etsy two minutes ago to pay my monthly bill, and was told that my work had been featured in a treasury! For those of you who are not etsy-educated, a treasury is a member curated page featuring items from different shops in a similar theme. This particular treasury is titled SMA Awareness Month, in honor of August being SMA Awareness Month (happy August!), and was created by BusyBeeSewingForSMA, whose neck pillows I featured in an earlier post.

Some other neat things featured:
SMA Awareness Ribbon Inspired Bracelet, which can be found at LuLuBChicBoutique

Hot Pink and Black Tutu Wreath, which can be found at Aidensmommy75

Bronze Owl Earrings with Cognac Crystals, which can be found at PurplePansy333

And of course, my beautiful A Sign of Spring artwork, which can be found at my etsy shop, HavannahSoy

Happy Birthday to a Very Special Wizard!

On this day, 21 years ago, a little boy was born with amazing powers that would vanquish the evil in this world. This power was love. Happy Birthday Harry Potter!

Is it weird to think of my life without Harry? Duhhhhhh. The first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, came out in the US in 1998, when I was three, and my brother was six. It wasn't long after this, maybe a year, maybe more, when my brother became interested, and my mom began reading them aloud to us. I, quite literally, grew up with Harry coming to life from the pages of the book cradled in my mom's hands at my bedside, my brother nestled under her arm.

My very first mental picture of the Harry Potter world? A house, much like the one I live in today - a small ranch with a spacious backyard - and a modern motorcycle landing on the street in front of my house, the man (who looked suspiciously like the red power ranger) grabbing a baby, and flying off with him.

Of course, my imagination has grown considerably since I was four, and with the aid of the Harry Potter movies, I now have a wonderfully rich place in my mind that I can live in when I find myself wanting to be more... magical. Man, it sucks being a muggle, doesn't it?

So anyway... Harry would be 21 today, if we are considering that the last book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, came out in 2007. In this book, he was, of course 17. It's interesting to think of the things Harry would be able to do today in the muggle world. Buy alcohol. Buy a lottery ticket. Gamble. I wonder how that would go for him, or if it would all bore him because of his much more interesting wizardly pursuits.

......Hmmm........

It'd probably bore him. Oh well. Happy Birthday anyway, Harry!

6 Facebook Statuses that are a Waste of Cyber Space

And there I am, again, my eyes glued to the home page of my facebook account, reading a "friend's" status and silently trying to think of all the appropriate things that might be wrong with her/him, all the reasons why she/he is telling the world these stupid things that are equivalent to "I DON'T HAVE A LIFE." (ironic, isn't it?) I bet you know at least one of these people. Am I right? I thought so. That's because they are everywhere. And the really scary part of it? You might be turning into one of these. Or (gasp!) you might already be one!

But, with my helpful list below, you can identify whether or not you truly do not have a life, and hopefully make some changes, for the benefit of the entire human population. If you are reading these statuses and they sound unnervingly familiar - aka, you wrote one - DON'T BE UPSET! I still love you! That is, if I even loved you in the first place, which, I probably maybe hopefully did. Look, I can be mean, I know it. And I can have really stupid statuses. But this is simply constructive criticism. Think of it as I am helping out you, and you are helping out humanity.

And now, without further ado, 6 Facebook Statuses that are a Waste of Cyber Space:

1. Got off work at 2, now going to hang out with baby. i love u
Ok. First of all, it's great that you have a job. Honestly. It really is. And, it's also great that you have a baby (thinking maybe this is referring to significant other and not an infant, still a little unclear). It's great that you love "u." BUT, my friend, we just don't care. That's the truth. And maybe, just maybe, we would care if you didn't post this everyday.

2. I miss you. Wish we were back together again.
This status is borderline acceptable, but only if you post this/something similar to this ONCE after a breakup, and even then, it's still on the line. You see, when you say "I miss you," you are speaking to someone, in this case, your ex. Well. If it was a really nasty breakup, I doubt you're even facebook friends with him/her still. And if it wasn't that bad, and you are still facebook buddies, do you think he/she is even going to read it? And if they do, are they lame enough to call you up and say "hey baby, let's give it another go" when you didn't want them back enough to call them? Posting this once is questionable. Twice is too many. Three times is ridiculous. Four times is disgusting.

3. Apple pie and a Greek salad for dinner - yum!
Anything where you are informing the world what you are eating for dinner/lunch/breakfast is unacceptable,UNLESS it is something highly unusual and exotic - for example, jellied eel. Otherwise, we don't want to hear it. And if you stop and think about this one for a minute, I think you'll realize how very strange it is. I never go out into the front lawn and shout what I'm eating, so why would I go onto facebook and do the same thing?

4. Embrace the beauty in your life!
Are you on something? No, really. I love how enthusiastic you are about your life, but I believe your time would be better spent writing Hallmark cards/composing a self-help book/creating one of those terrible motivational speeches. Thanks.

5. Every year, (insert number) people are diagnosed with cancer, and (insert number) of these people will die from complications of their disease. (insert number) will have to go through chemo, radiation, and intense treatments that will leave them exhausted and hurting. But hope never dies, and you too, can inspire hope for more survivors. Repost if you care. If you don't repost, you don't care.
These sort of statuses come in all forms - gay rights, faith, disability rights, and quite frankly, friends, they're all the same. Don't get me wrong, the majority of this status is great. BUT, the moment you write that last sentence, well, I'm NOT going to repost, because I'm not one of those people that gets a guilt trip from someone's status. And neither should you. I happen to care quite a bit, and I do like your status, just not they way you chose to conclude it.

6. Give me everything tonight...
This is referring to any popular song lyrics you post. Just... don't do it. Please. If we wanted to hear this, we could turn on the radio to that really lame station that only plays really lame songs because people buy them because they like to imagine doing things with other people to the horrendous beats of electronic, computerized, unoriginal music. Song lyrics are only acceptable if they are from a song less than 25% of the population knows, and only because they make people wonder why you are stringing together random words and phrases.
